Dosage Calculation and Application
Dosage Calculation Formula
Admixture Quantity (L or kg) = Cement Content (kg) × Dosage (%) / 100
Example: M25 concrete with 350 kg/m³ cement, Superplasticizer at 1.2%:
Admixture = 350 × 1.2 / 100 = 4.2 L/m³
For 10 m³: 42 liters required (add 5-10% for wastage)
Typical Dosage Ranges
| Admixture Type | Typical Dosage | Maximum Dosage |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerator | 1.0-2.0% | 2.5% |
| Retarder | 0.2-0.5% | 0.6% |
| Water-Reducer | 0.1-0.4% | 0.5% |
| Air-Entraining | 0.02-0.2% | 0.3% |
| Superplasticizer | 0.5-2.5% | 3.0% |

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Five types covered: 1) Accelerators - fast setting and early strength, 2) Retarders - delay setting, 3) Water-reducers/Plasticizers - 5-15% water reduction, 4) Air-entraining - freeze-thaw protection, 5) Superplasticizers (normal and retarding) - 15-30% water reduction. All require BIS certification with ISI mark for sale in India.
Standard dosage: 0.5-2.5% by cement weight. Lower dosage (0.5-1%) for moderate workability improvement, higher dosage (1.5-2.5%) for flowing concrete or maximum water reduction. Always follow manufacturer recommendations. Overdosage >3% causes segregation, excessive bleeding, delayed setting. Underdosage <0.5% gives insufficient effect. Start with mid-range (1.2%) and adjust in trial batches.
Yes! IS 9103 mandates superplasticizers MUST be chloride-free to prevent reinforcement corrosion in RCC. Other admixture types must declare chloride content on packaging. For any reinforced concrete work, use only chloride-free admixtures. Chloride-based accelerators (calcium chloride) not permitted in RCC per IS 456. Always check ISI mark and chloride-free certification on product label.
Typical reduction: 15-30% while maintaining workability. Example: Control mix 180 L/m³ water. With 1.5% superplasticizer: water reduced to 135-155 L/m³ (25-30% reduction). Benefits: Lower w/c ratio = higher strength (+20-30%), improved durability (lower permeability), reduced cement for same strength (10-15% savings). Or maintain same w/c and cement, achieve flowing concrete (150mm+ slump) for easy pumping and placement. Verify actual reduction in trial batches with project materials.
Yes, but considerations vary: M10-M15: rarely need admixtures, plain concrete applications. M20-M25: water-reducers optional, beneficial for workability. M30-M35: plasticizers recommended, improve quality. M40+: superplasticizers essential, needed to achieve low w/c (0.40-0.45). Check IS 456 exposure requirements: Mild/Moderate - admixtures optional, Severe/Very Severe - beneficial for durability, Extreme - superplasticizers needed for w/c 0.40. Always conduct trial batches with actual materials before production use.
Shelf life by type: Liquid admixtures: 6-12 months from manufacture date, Powder admixtures: 12-24 months, Air-entraining: 6 months (sensitive to degradation). Storage critical: Store 5-35°C, protect from freezing (liquids), keep sealed and dry (powders), avoid direct sunlight. Check expiry date on packaging - mandatory per IS 9103. Expired admixtures: may not meet performance requirements, reduced effectiveness (20-50% loss), test before use if near expiry. Use FIFO (first-in-first-out) rotation. Most ready-mix plants buy monthly to ensure freshness.
Formula: Admixture (L or kg) = Cement (kg/m³) × Dosage (%) ÷ 100. Example calculations: M25 concrete, 350 kg cement/m³, superplasticizer 1.2%: = 350 × 1.2 ÷ 100 = 4.2 L/m³. For 50 m³ pour: 4.2 × 50 = 210 liters. Add wastage 5-10%: 210 × 1.1 = 231 liters order. M30, 380 kg cement, retarder 0.3%: = 380 × 0.3 ÷ 100 = 1.14 kg/m³. Always order 5-10% extra for wastage, spillage, and trials. Round up to nearest container size (typically 20L, 30L, 200L drums).
Generally NOT recommended without manufacturer approval. Acceptable combinations: Water-reducer + air-entraining (common in pavements), Some products pre-blend water-reducer + retarder. Prohibited combinations: Accelerator + retarder (contradictory effects), Different manufacturers same type (unknown interactions), Expired + fresh admixtures. If combining needed: Check compatibility with BOTH manufacturers, Conduct trial batches mandatory, Test setting time and strength, Document results. Modern admixtures often multi-functional (e.g., retarding superplasticizer) eliminating need for mixing. Safest: use single manufacturer complete system.
Overdosage effects by type: Superplasticizer >3%: severe segregation and bleeding, excessive retardation (24+ hour delay), surface defects and finishing problems, may reduce strength despite lower w/c. Accelerator >2.5%: flash setting (unworkable), cracking and reduced durability, very high heat generation. Retarder >0.6%: excessive delay (48+ hours), indefinite setting possible, concrete may not gain strength. Air-entraining >0.3%: excessive air (>8%), significant strength loss (>20%). Prevention: use calibrated dispensers, follow manufacturer dosage strictly, safe range ±10% of recommended. Severe overdosage: concrete rejection likely, costly remediation.
