45 MPa High-Strength Concrete 2026 β IS 10262:2019 Absolute Volume with OPC 53 + Silica Fume, High-Range PCE, Aggregate Quality Assessment, RCPT Chloride Permeability Estimate, ITZ Quality Index & IS 456 Compliance
M45 sits at the transition between standard structural concrete and specialist high-strength concrete. At 45 MPa, aggregate quality begins to co-govern concrete strength alongside paste quality β weak aggregates (limestone with ACV > 30%) will limit achievable strength regardless of cement content or admixture dose. Silica fume (8β12% bwoc) is strongly recommended for consistent M45 achievement β it densifies the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between aggregate and paste, eliminating the weakest link in the microstructure.
This calculator implements the full IS 10262:2019 Absolute Volume Method for M45, with additional HSC-specific assessments: aggregate quality index, ITZ quality estimate, RCPT chloride permeability prediction, and high-range PCE dosage guidance.

Silica fume (micro-silica, IS 15388) is amorphous SiOβ with particle size 100Γ finer than cement (0.1β0.5 Β΅m). At 8β12% addition:
1. ITZ densification: SF fills the micro-voids in the interfacial transition zone between aggregate and paste β the weakest link at M45+.
2. Pozzolanic reaction: SF reacts with Ca(OH)β β additional C-S-H gel β denser, less permeable paste.
3. Filler effect: Physical packing improvement; reduces macro-voids.
Effect: +8β15 MPa strength at same w/c; RCPT reduced from ~2500 to <1000 coulombs.
Above M40, concrete strength is co-governed by aggregate quality. The concrete CANNOT exceed the paste-aggregate bond strength β and at very low w/c (0.30β0.36), the paste is already very strong. If aggregate crushes (high ACV) or is porous (high absorption), aggregate failure precedes paste failure, limiting achievable strength. For M45: ACV β€ 25%, LA Abrasion β€ 30%, Sg β₯ 2.65. Limestone is marginal β basalt or hard granite preferred.
ASTM C1202 / AASHTO T277 (6-hour charge passed, coulombs):
>4000 C = High permeability (M20βM25 OPC, no SF)
2000β4000 C = Moderate (M30βM35 OPC)
1000β2000 C = Low (M35βM40 + GGBS/FA)
100β1000 C = Very Low (M40βM50 + SF)
<100 C = Negligible (UHPC / M60+ with SF 15%+)
Target for M45 column in Very Severe/Extreme: <1500 C (LowβVery Low category). Add SF 10% to reliably achieve <1000 C.
MSA: 16mm typical; check IS 456 Cl.5.3.1 (MSA β€ 3/4 clear bar spacing). Seismic confinement hoops reduce effective clear spacing dramatically.
Slump: 150β175mm needed for congested columns; consider SCC SF2 (660β750mm flow) for extreme confinement.
Pump design: Plan output slump with transit loss β plant dispatch at 180mm for 150mm placement target at 35-minute transit.
Column stripping: Wait for 25 MPa minimum (penetration resistance per IS 8142) β not time-based.
