IS 10262 Trial Mix Requirements (Cl. 9): Minimum 3 batches. Accept if 28-day mean strength ≥ TMS (— MPa) with slump within ±25mm of design. For M40, trial cubes should be cast at minimum 6 per trial (3 for 7d, 3 for 28d). If 28d result < 0.9 × TMS, redesign with lower w/c or higher cement.

IS 456:2000, IS 10262:2019 and IS 1343:2012 specifications for M40 concrete

    🔎 M40 Grade — Key Facts

    • Characteristic Cube Strength: fck = 40 MPa at 28 days (150mm cube, IS 516)
    • IS 456 Classification: Minimum for Extreme exposure class (IS 456 Table 5)
    • Target Mean Strength: fcr = 40 + 1.65 × 5.0 = 48.25 MPa (σ = 5.0 MPa assumed)
    • IS 456 max w/c: 0.40 (Extreme) · Max cement: 450 kg/m³ · Min cement: 360 kg/m³
    • Superplasticiser: MANDATORY — without SP, w/c = 0.40 gives cement ≈ 465 kg/m³ (exceeds IS 456 max of 450 kg/m³)
    • EN 206 Equivalent: C32/40 (cylinder f'c ≈ 32 MPa)
    • ACI f'c Equivalent: ≈ 32 MPa cylinder = 4,640 psi
    • IS 1343 Prestressed: M40 is the minimum grade for pre-tensioned prestressed concrete (IS 1343 Cl. 6.1.2)
    • Nominal cover (Extreme): 75 mm minimum (IS 456 Table 16)
    • Typical applications: Bridge decks, offshore platforms, industrial floors, extreme marine structures, pre-tensioned PSC
    ⚠️ SP is Not Optional at M40 — IS 456 Compliance Requirement: At fck = 40 MPa with Extreme exposure (max w/c = 0.40), the base water content from IS 10262 Table 2 is 186 L/m³ (20mm MSA, 75mm slump). Without SP: Cement = 186 / 0.40 = 465 kg/m³ — this EXCEEDS IS 456 Cl. 8.2.4.2 maximum of 450 kg/m³. A PCE superplasticiser achieving ≥18% water reduction brings cement to ≤412 kg/m³ — within IS 456 limits. Without SP, the M40 design is inherently non-compliant with IS 456.
