What Is a Concrete Mix Ratio? – Complete Explanation 2026
A concrete mix ratio expresses the proportions of cement, fine aggregate (sand), and coarse aggregate (gravel or crushed stone) in a concrete mix — typically written as C : FA : CA (Cement : Fine Aggregate : Coarse Aggregate). The ratio 1:2:4 means for every 1 part cement, you use 2 parts sand and 4 parts aggregate. Water is specified separately, usually as a water-cement ratio (W/C).
1 : 2 : 4
🔵 1 part Cement — the binder that hardens
🟡 2 parts Fine Aggregate (Sand) — fills voids between CA particles
⚫ 4 parts Coarse Aggregate — structural load-bearing matrix
💧 + Water — hydrates cement; W/C ratio governs strength

Mix Ratio by Volume vs by Mass — A Critical Distinction
- IS 456:2000 Table 9 nominal mix ratios are by VOLUME — the 1:2:4 means 1 volume of cement to 2 volumes of sand to 4 volumes of aggregate. The volumes are measured using gauge boxes or measuring tins on site. Volume batching is permitted for M5–M25 nominal mixes
- IS 10262:2019 design mix ratios are by MASS — when you read the output of a design mix calculation as “Cement: 350 kg, FA: 740 kg, CA: 1060 kg”, the ratio by mass is 1 : 2.11 : 3.03. Mass batching is always more accurate than volume batching and is mandatory for M30+ design mixes
- Volume ratio ≠ Mass ratio because different materials have different bulk densities. For example, cement bulk density ≈ 1440 kg/m³; sand ≈ 1540 kg/m³; aggregate ≈ 1600 kg/m³. A 1:2:4 volume ratio converts to approximately 1:2.14:4.44 by mass — not simply 1:2:4
- Design mix ratios vary — unlike nominal mixes which have fixed ratios, design mix ratios depend on the specific materials used. The same M30 grade can have a ratio of 1:1.8:3.1 with one set of materials and 1:2.2:3.5 with another set — both are correct design mixes for their respective materials
IS 456:2000 Table 9 — All Nominal Mix Ratios 2026
IS 456:2000 Table 9 specifies nominal mix proportions for grades M5 to M25. These are simplified “cookbook” ratios for minor works and low-grade applications. Above M25, nominal mixes are not permitted — design mix per IS 10262:2019 is mandatory.
| Grade | Nominal Mix Ratio (C:FA:CA by Vol) | Typical Use | Total Parts | Cement per m³ (approx) | Max W/C (IS 456) | Design Mix Required? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M5 | 1 : 5 : 10 | Mass fill, bedding, sub-grade | 16 | ~220 kg | — | No (PCC only) |
| M7.5 | 1 : 4 : 8 | Rubble masonry backing, lean fill | 13 | ~260 kg | — | No (PCC only) |
| M10 | 1 : 3 : 6 | Lean concrete, pathways, non-structural | 10 | ~315 kg | — | No |
| M15 | 1 : 2 : 4 | PCC blinding, lean sub-base, compound walls | 7 | ~320 kg | 0.65 | No (optional) |
| M20 | 1 : 1.5 : 3 | Minimum RCC grade; lintels, minor structural | 5.5 | ~385 kg | 0.55 | Optional (recommended) |
| M25 | 1 : 1 : 2 | Standard structural concrete; beams, slabs | 4 | ~475 kg | 0.50 | Strongly recommended |
| M30 and above | No nominal mix | Any structural element with higher strength requirement | — | — | ≤ 0.45 | MANDATORY |
Nominal Mix Limitations — Why You Should Use Design Mix Even for M20 and M25
- No moisture correction: Nominal mixes assume aggregates are in SSD condition. On a typical site where sand has 4–6% surface moisture, the actual w/c of a “1:2:4” mix batched by volume is 0.15–0.25 higher than intended — producing concrete that may be 5–10 MPa weaker than expected
- No aggregate quality correction: A 1:2:4 mix with Zone I (coarse) sand needs different water than with Zone III sand, but the ratio stays the same — the site engineer just “adds water until it looks right,” which destroys the w/c control
- Volume batching is inherently imprecise: The bulk density of sand varies 10–15% depending on moisture content (bulking effect). At peak bulking (about 5–6% moisture), sand can appear 25–30% more voluminous than dry sand — so a gauge box of “moist sand” contains only 70–75% of the sand that a gauge box of “dry sand” contains
- IS 456:2000 itself recommends design mix: IS 456 Clause 9.1 states that mix proportioning “shall preferably be done by proper proportioning of ingredients” and design mix is preferred over nominal mix even for grades where nominal mix is permitted
How a Design Mix Produces a Ratio – Conversion Method 2026
Every IS 10262:2019 design mix calculation produces quantities in kg/m³. These can be converted to a mix ratio by dividing all quantities by the cement content. The resulting ratio is specific to those materials — it changes with different SG values, FA zone, or w/c ratio.
CONVERTING kg/m³ DESIGN MIX TO MIX RATIO:
Given a design mix result:
Cement (C) = 352 kg/m³
Fine Aggregate (FA) = 764 kg/m³
Coarse Aggregate (CA) = 1096 kg/m³
Water (W) = 169 kg/m³
Step 1 — Divide all by cement content:
Cement ratio = 352 / 352 = 1.00
FA ratio = 764 / 352 = 2.17
CA ratio = 1096 / 352 = 3.11
W/C ratio = 169 / 352 = 0.48
Mix ratio (by mass) = 1 : 2.17 : 3.11 (w/c = 0.48)
Step 2 — Simplify to nearest 0.05 for site communication:
Mix ratio ≈ 1 : 2.15 : 3.10 (w/c = 0.48)
Important: This ratio is valid only for these specific materials.
Changing aggregate source or FA zone changes all three ratio numbers.
Do NOT use this ratio with volume batching — it is a mass ratio.
For site batching: state quantities per 50kg bag of cement explicitly.
Per-Bag Site Batching Quantities from a Design Mix Ratio
SITE BATCHING CALCULATION (per 50kg bag of cement):
From design mix: C = 352 kg/m³ | FA = 764 kg/m³ | CA = 1096 kg/m³ | W = 169 kg/m³
Cement per bag = 50 kg (one bag)
Scale factor = 50 / 352 = 0.1420
FA per bag = 764 × 0.1420 = 108.5 kg (≈ 109 kg)
CA per bag = 1096 × 0.1420 = 155.6 kg (≈ 156 kg)
Water per bag = 169 × 0.1420 = 24.0 litres
Number of bags per m³ = 352 / 50 = 7.04 bags ≈ 7 bags (slight over-design)
If field moisture of FA = 4.5%, absorption = 1.2%:
FA net surface moisture = 4.5 − 1.2 = 3.3%
FA water contribution per bag = 109 × 0.033 = 3.6 litres
Batch water per bag = 24.0 − 3.6 = 20.4 litres
Wet FA per bag = 109 × (1 + 4.5/100) = 113.9 kg ≈ 114 kg

Frequently Asked Questions – Mix Ratios 2026
Q: What is the correct concrete mix ratio for M25 concrete?
IS 456:2000 Table 9 specifies the nominal mix ratio for M25 as 1:1:2 (cement : sand : aggregate, by volume). However, for formal structural work, a design mix per IS 10262:2019 is strongly recommended — this gives a ratio of approximately 1:2.16:3.25 by mass for typical Indian materials (OPC 53, Zone II river sand, 20mm crushed granite, w/c 0.50). Note that the nominal 1:1:2 ratio by volume produces a richer, higher-cement mix than the design mix — the nominal mix typically gives 450–500 kg/m³ cement vs the design mix’s 330–350 kg/m³ — because nominal mixes were historically over-specified to compensate for variable site quality.
Q: Why is the nominal mix ratio (1:1.5:3 for M20) so different from the design mix ratio (1:2.40:3.83)?
The apparent discrepancy occurs for two reasons: (1) Basis — volume vs mass: the nominal 1:1.5:3 is by volume; the design 1:2.40:3.83 is by mass. Converting 1:1.5:3 by volume to mass (using bulk densities cement≈1440, sand≈1540, agg≈1600 kg/m³) gives approximately 1:1.60:3.33 by mass — closer to, but still different from, the design mix ratio; (2) Philosophy: nominal mixes were set conservatively with high cement content to compensate for unknown material quality and poor site batching accuracy. The IS 10262 design mix uses actual material SGs to precisely compute the optimal aggregate content for the given w/c — allowing more aggregate and less cement than the nominal mix, without compromising strength.
Q: How many bags of cement per m³ for M30 concrete?
For a designed M30 concrete (IS 10262:2019, OPC 53, Moderate exposure, Good control S=4.0): cement content ≈ 380 kg/m³ → 7.6 bags of 50 kg cement per m³. In practice, 8 bags per m³ is used for site planning to account for batching losses and rounding. Note: if using M30 nominal mix (which IS 456 does not provide — M30 has no nominal mix), some engineers mistakenly use the M25 ratio (1:1:2) for M30 — this is incorrect and produces under-strength concrete. M30 and above must use design mix only.
Q: Can I use the 1:2:4 mix ratio for M15 PCC blinding today in 2026?
Yes — IS 456:2000 Table 9 still permits the 1:2:4 nominal mix for M15. For PCC blinding (non-structural), the nominal mix is appropriate and widely used in 2026. However, for best results: (1) batch by mass rather than volume to avoid sand bulking errors; (2) test the sand moisture and apply batch water correction; (3) use weight batching even for site mixers (a simple scale or weighbridge). The typical M15 nominal mix produces approximately 315–320 kg/m³ cement, 640–680 kg/m³ sand, and 1280–1360 kg/m³ aggregate. For any element above M15 that carries structural load — even simple lintels — use M20 minimum with design mix.
