    📌 Column-Specific Concrete Requirements — IS 456:2000

    • Minimum grade: IS 456 Table 5 — Mild M20; Moderate M25; Severe M30; Very Severe M35; Extreme M40. High-rise columns typically M35–M55.
    • Maximum aggregate size (IS 456 Cl. 26.4.2): MSA ≤ (clear bar spacing − 5mm) and MSA ≤ 75% of nominal cover. Both criteria must be satisfied simultaneously.
    • Clear bar spacing: Minimum 40mm or bar diameter (whichever is greater) per IS 456 Cl. 26.3.2. Tied columns with stirrups: spacing governs congestion classification.
    • Minimum steel ratio: 0.8% of gross cross-sectional area (IS 456 Cl. 26.5.3.1).
    • Maximum steel ratio: 6% of gross cross-sectional area (IS 456 Cl. 26.5.3.1). Above 4%, laps must be staggered.
    • Congestion factor: For columns with ρ > 3% or clear spacing < 75mm, reduce jc by 0.02–0.04 and increase slump target by 25–50mm to ensure adequate concrete flow through rebar cage.
    • Design mix mandatory: IS 456 Cl. 9.1 — M30 and above requires design mix (IS 10262). Not nominal mix.
Column Pumping Requirements (IS 4926): Column concrete is almost always placed by pump. Minimum slump at pump = 100mm; optimal = 120–140mm for columns with normal reinforcement, 140–165mm for heavily congested columns (ρ > 3% or clear spacing < 60mm). Use PCE Type G SP for transit >45 min or temperature >30°C. Pump pipe minimum 100mm (4") diameter for 20mm MSA.
