Structural Engineer / Designer
Need detailed proportions, durability assessment, or BS 8500 / EN 206 compliance for a specific project? Use the durability calculator, HSC calculators (M45, M60), and BS 8500 tool for international projects.
Start: Durability Calculator → Grade Calculator (M30–M60) → BS 8500
The Core Principle: Every concrete mix design comes down to three steps — (1) Fix the w/c ratio from strength and IS 456 durability limits, (2) Minimise water content using the largest MSA possible and SP if warranted, (3) Calculate cement = Water ÷ w/c. Everything else is verification and adjustment.

⚡ Quick Reference — Essential Formulas

Target Mean Strength
fcm = fck + 1.65 × S
S from IS 10262 Table 1: M10–15: 3.5 | M20: 4.0 | M25–35: 5.0 | M40–55: 5.5 | M55+: 6.5
Design w/c (Governing)
w/c = min(w/c_strength,
w/c_IS456_max)
Always use the lower. IS 456 Table 5: Mild 0.60 | Moderate 0.50 | Severe 0.45 | V.Severe 0.40 | Extreme 0.35
Cement Content
C = W / w/c
C_design = max(C, C_min)
C_min per IS 456 Table 5. Max 550 kg/m³ (IS 456 Cl.8.2.5). W = free water after SP reduction.
Absolute Volume Check
V_agg = 1.0 − V_c − V_w
− V_air − V_SP
V = mass/(Sg×1000). Air = 2% (no AEA). Sum must = 1.000 m³ ± 0.001.
SP Water Correction
W_design = W_table × (1−WR%)
W_batch = W_design − W_SP_free
WR% for PCE: typically 20–28%. W_SP_free = SP_vol × (1 − solid content).
Aggregate Masses
FA = V_FA × Sg_FA × 1000
CA = V_CA × Sg_CA × 1000
V_FA = V_agg × FA% (from IS 10262 Table 3). Typical: crushed granite Sg = 2.65–2.68.
Aggregate Moisture Correction
W_batch adj = W_design
− (MC_FA × FA_mass/100)
− (MC_CA × CA_mass/100)
MC = surface moisture above SSD (%). IS 10262 Cl.5.6. Critical in monsoon season.
MSA Limits (IS 456 Cl.5.3.1)
MSA ≤ section/4
MSA ≤ 3/4 × clear spacing
MSA ≤ cover − 5mm
Use minimum of all three. Standard sizes: 10, 12.5, 16, 20, 25, 40mm (IS 383:2016).

📚 Key Standards at a Glance

IS 10262:2019 — Concrete Mix Design

The primary Indian standard for concrete mix design (Absolute Volume Method). Covers: target mean strength calculation, w/c selection from strength-w/c charts, water content from Table 2, cement calculation, absolute volume proportioning from Table 3, and trial mix procedure (Cl.7). Mandatory for M25 and above.

IS 456:2000 — Plain and Reinforced Concrete Code

Structural code governing use of concrete. Key mix design provisions: Table 3 (exposure classification), Table 5 (exposure class requirements: min grade, max w/c, min cement), Table 16 (minimum cover), Cl.5.3.1 (MSA limits), Cl.7.3 (no water addition on site), Cl.8.2.5 (550 kg/m³ max cementitious), Cl.9.1 (designed mix for M25+).

IS 383:2016 — Coarse and Fine Aggregate

Specifies aggregate quality for concrete: grading limits for all sizes, fine aggregate Zone I–IV, physical property limits (flakiness ≤ 25%, elongation ≤ 15%, deleterious matter limits). Reference for FA zone selection in IS 10262 Table 3.

IS 9103:1999 — Admixtures for Concrete

Specifies requirements for chemical admixtures: WRA (Type A), Retarder (B), Accelerator (C), WRRA (D), HRRWA (F/G), Air-entraining (H). Tests: water reduction, setting time, strength, compatibility. Governs admixture certification requirements for mix design.

IS 516:1959 — Methods of Tests for Strength of Concrete

Specifies cube testing (150mm), slump test, compaction factor, beam flexural test. The basis for all cube test results used in mix design verification. 28-day cube strength is the standard acceptance criterion for all structural concrete per IS 456.
