CEMENT CONTENT COMPARISON (M30 cube equiv., w/c = 0.50): IS 10262:2019: C = 186 / 0.50 = 372 kg/m³ (water from IS Table 2) DOE Method: C = 195 / 0.50 = 390 kg/m³ (water from DOE table) ACI 211.1: C = 205 / 0.50 = 410 kg/m³ (water from ACI Table 6.3.3) Water difference (ACI vs IS): 205 − 186 = 19 L/m³ Cement difference at w/c=0.50: 19/0.50 = 38 kg/m³ more by ACI method Cost difference: 38 × ₹5.5 = ₹209/m³ more costly by ACI approach Both give compliant concrete — difference is method calibration to local aggregates.

IRC:112 — Key Differences from IS 456

IRC:112-2020 imposes stricter durability requirements than IS 456 for bridge structures
RequirementIRC:112-2020IS 456:2000Note
Min grade (RC)M25 / M30 (aggressive)M20 minimumIRC more stringent
Min grade (PSC)M40 (pre-tensioned)IS 1343 governsBridge PSC always M40+
Max w/c (bridge deck)0.40 (XS2 marine)0.45 (Severe IS 456)IRC stricter for marine bridges
Min cement (deck)380 kg/m³ (XD2)320 kg/m³ (Severe)60 kg/m³ more for bridges
Cover (deck)40–75mm (Table 15.4)20–75mmIRC specifies by element type
Chloride limit0.30% by mass cement0.40% by mass cementStricter for bridge longevity
Sampling frequency1 per 30 m³1 per 50 m³More frequent for bridges
Design life100 years (national highways)Not specified explicitlyIRC incorporates service-life design
IRC:112 Exposure Classification: IRC:112 adopts EN 206-type exposure classes (XC, XD, XS, XF, XA) rather than IS 456's Mild/Moderate/Severe system. IS 456 Severe ≈ XC4/XD1; Very Severe ≈ XS1/XD2; Extreme ≈ XS2/XS3. IRC:112 leads to more demanding w/c and cement requirements than IS 456 for equivalent environments — intentionally so, given the 100-year design life expectation for national highway bridges.

🇮🇳
IS 1343 — Prestressed Concrete Requirements

IS 1343:2012 — additional mix design requirements beyond IS 10262 and IS 456

📌 IS 1343 Mix Design Requirements

  • Minimum grade: M40 for pre-tensioned; M30 for post-tensioned (IS 1343 Cl. 6.1.2).
  • Strength at prestress transfer: Minimum 35 MPa cube before jacking forces applied to pre-tensioned elements. Mix must achieve this at 16–24 hours — requires early-strength design.
  • Maximum w/c: 0.45 normal; 0.40 marine — more restrictive than equivalent IS 456 grades.
  • Chloride limit: Total Cl⁻ ≤ 0.30% by mass cement (non-marine); 0.15% for marine PSC. All aggregates, water and admixtures must be tested for chloride contribution.
  • CaCl₂ absolutely prohibited in PSC (IS 1343 Cl. 6.4). Any admixture must comply with IS 9103 with chlorides ≤ 0.1% by mass.
  • Mix design: IS 10262:2019 for proportioning, with IS 1343 compliance checks overlaid as additional constraints.

⚠️ Critical Warning — Never Mix Standards in the Same Design: Water content tables in different standards are calibrated for different aggregate systems and density assumptions. Using ACI Table 6.3.3 water (205 L/m³) with IS 10262 cement calculation at the same w/c gives 38 kg/m³ more cement than intended and a mix matching neither standard. Always use one standard consistently from water table through aggregate proportioning. Confirm the governing standard in the project specification before beginning mix design.
